Difference between Wainscoting and Beadboard
Shiplap is has its roots as a type of exterior siding for homes. Shiplap is placed horizontally on walls and the top board overlaps the board below it. It gives a rustic look that fits in particularly well with farmhouse decor. It is also
a great
choice to make an accent wall in modern and contemporary homes or businesses.
Beadboard is very similar to shiplap, where the top board overlaps the one below it. Beadboard also has an extra bead added onto one side of each board, which is how it gets its name. Beadboard can be used for wainscoting or installed on
entire walls to create an accent wall.
What size Crown Molding should I use?
There are three aspects that should be looked at when selecting the size of crown molding:
What room is it to be installed? The crown height selection may differ between large and small rooms. Smaller, less intricate molding is typically used in a smaller room, such as a
pantry or bathroom. Larger crown molding
is typically used in larger rooms and rooms used for entertaining, such as foyers, dining rooms, hearth rooms, and family rooms.
Consider your existing trim Use the trim on your baseboards, door, and windows to help make the decision on the height of your crown molding. The typical choice is to make the crown
height the same height, or a little
shorter than your baseboards.
Use Ceiling Height Typically, ceiling height is the main factor used to determine crown height. Use the following guidelines: 1) typical 8 foot ceiling: 2.5 to 6 inches, 9 foot ceiling:
3 to 7.5 inches, 10 foot ceiling:
3.5
to 8 inches.
Is MDF or Wood better?
MDF and wood both have their advantages and disadvantages. MDF stands for "medium density fiberboard". MDF is made by breaking down wood scraps into fibers and then combining them together with wax and a resin bindedr. Heat and pressure
are
applied to the mixture to form the wood-like panels.
MDF is an economical alternative to wood for baseboard and casings. It essentially has zero imperfections. It has the advantage of coming primed and ready to paint. MDF also has the advantage of not having twists or warps. Conversely, MDF
is a softer material than wood and is more susceptible to damage. When cutting MDF for installation, the extra fine dust that is formed makes cleaning up more diffcult and is potentially hazardous to the installer's health. It is
recommended for the installer to wear a filter to protect against the dust.
Wood is more durable than MDF. It does not damage as easily as MDF. Wood nail holes are easier to fill than MDF during installation. Wood baseboard and casings have more imperfections than MDF. Wood can be warped and have twists. This can
make it more difficult to install when encountering imperfections in walls or flooring. MDF is easier to conform to imperfections in walls or the flooring.
